It’s already July and the clock is ticking fast. But there’s no sign yet of a new deal at Dallas Cowboys for Dak Prescott. His fans were expecting the Cowboys to bind Prescott in a long-term deal at the beginning of this month. But it seems that they had been overly optimistic. It’s more than just a week left for the club to decide if they want the 26-year old quarterback for a longer period. Maybe, the Cowboys are planning a long-term contract, which is taking more time than expected. Or maybe, the franchise tender that Prescott signed in June is all they have for him.

Will Dak Prescott get a long-term contract?
Just in case the Cowboys don’t sign a new contract with Prescott within the next week, it might symbolize the end of his time in Dallas, although he would still stay throughout 2020, given that he has already signed the one-year tender. However, former New York Jets wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson is optimistic about Prescott signing a new deal with Dallas Cowboys.
Johnson recently appeared in the ESPN 103.3 FM’s “Dennis and Cowlishaw” show. While speaking everything related to the upcoming season, the 47-year old also discussed Prescott’s future.
He said, “Dak Prescott should get his money. … I think they get a [long-term] deal done, but if they don’t get a deal done and he wants to play on a one-year deal for $31 million, I mean, that’s not like chopped liver. He goes out there and he proves it, now he’s got them on the hook for close to $40 million. And then, are they going to want to pay that? Could he turn it into a Kirk Cousins-type situation? Which I think Dak Prescott is a better quarterback than Kirk Cousins, that’s just me.”

If we look at Prescott’s recent past, he has been in such a situation before when he didn’t have a long-term deal with his club. Just prior to the 2019 season, Dallas Cowboys seemed to have waited to figure out how the young man responds on the field before offering him a deal. And soon after, Dak Prescott produced his finest performance in terms of statistics.
Since that time, Prescott has run 4,902 yards and generated 30 touchdowns until this offseason. But his performance could earn him nothing more than a franchise tag. He might feel low if the Cowboys still don’t consider him for a long-term deal. We have to wait until July 15 to get a clear idea of Prescott’s future in Dallas. Whatever happens, one thing is for sure. If the Cowboys don’t agree with Prescott on a new deal before the deadline, no negotiations would be possible until 2021. That is what Prescott signed in for.
