Following the 2020 season, where Dak Prescott played under the franchise tag, the Dallas Cowboys and the 29-year-old quarterback agreed on a 4 year $160 million deal in 2021. Out of which, the guaranteed amount to the player is $126 million.
While their association seems like a long one, with the fans accepting the player and him getting backed by Jerry Jones, it has been recently revealed that the Cowboys have a contingency in place if things do not go as planned.

Even though, as of now, there are no indications of the Cowboys moving away from Dak, ESPN’s Dan Graziano has revealed some insight from the player’s contract.
Prescott has completed half of his contract term already. With only 2 years remaining on paper, the 29-year-old looks to be there even after the next two seasons. However, if Jerry Jones and the team wanted to move the player away, 2024 would be the season to do so.
According to Graziano, who looked at multiple different contracts of star QBs, 2024 would present Jerry with an opportunity to get rid of the player without an enormous cost. In fact, it will cost them no money and around $40 million in dead-money cap charges. But the reporter also wrote, “Dak’s only 29, and they love him there, so things would have to go very wrong for any of this to matter.”

And things were not looking good at the start of the season and Dak had to be sidelined for 5 straight weeks following his thumb injury in the opening game. But now the Cowboys are sitting as one of the favorites to make it through to the play-off berths.
