July 15, 2020, is the last day for players on franchise tags to negotiate a long-term contract with their respective teams. The Dak Prescott situation has been dragged along all offseason. Dallas Cowboys owner – Jerry Jones – is renowned for being a strict negotiator. The 26-year-old QB signed a franchise tag with the Cowboys earlier this year.

As per that agreement, Dak stands to make $31.4 million this season. However, reports indicated that Prescott was offered a long-term contract a couple of months ago. But he opted against signing the deal due to the length of the contract.

Could Dak Prescott be the next Kirk Cousins?

“My understanding is that Dak Prescott at this point, barring some sort of late phone call, is expected to play on the $31.4 million franchise tag. It’s a nice pay day, it’s not the long-term security he wants.”

“After this though, you’re right, they can’t negotiate again until next offseason. Then it becomes even harder to get a long-term deal. Prescott is kinda going the way, potentially, of Kirk Cousins where he goes franchise tag, franchise (then) free agent,” Rapoport said while speaking to GMFB.

“A couple of hours to go before the deadline and from what I understand no talks are scheduled right now between the Cowboys and Dak Prescott’s agent – Todd France. You mentioned James Slater’s Tweet about the final offer, that actually came several weeks or maybe even months ago between Cowboys and Prescott.”

“They want to pay him about $35 million per year around what Wilson was but they want a five-year deal. Prescott wants a four-year deal. Basically the ‘Anti-Mahomes.’ He wants to hit the free agency a little sooner. Both sides are firmly dug in to their positions,” Rapoport added.
