How does it feel to return home after five decades? A killer whale, Lolita is about to experience that same sense of ‘freedom’, and credit goes to Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay and other forces involved. In collaboration with Friends of Lolita, a non-profit organization, Irsay made it possible for the killer orca, also known as Tokitae, to get back to her natural habitat.

After spending 53 years in captivity, performing in stage shows at the Miami Seaquarium, Lolita is now on her way back to an ocean sanctuary to reunite with her family. The transportation from the Miami Seaquarium to her original home is being facilitated by $4 billion Irsay’s impressive possession.

Lolita will embark on a long-awaited journey back home!

The 8,000-pound orca will be flown back to the San Juan Islands, where her pod resides, using Irsay’s cargo plane and a $20 million investment. The Miami Seaquarium, as per an agreement with federal regulators last year, has ceased staging shows with Lolita, paving the way for her long-awaited return. The relocation will be carefully planned and executed by the Miami Seaquarium’s team, with over $500,000 already spent on Lolita’s life support systems for the journey, expected to occur within the next 18 to 24 months.

The collaboration between Jim Irsay, the theme park’s owner, an animal rights group, and other involved parties is essential to make this plan a reality. This incredible effort marks a significant milestone in Lolita’s journey back to her family after an astonishing 53 years of captivity.

All you need to know about Lolita!

In 1970, at about 4 years old, Lolita was taken from the Washington state coast and later purchased by the Miami Seaquarium. After entertaining visitors for over five decades, she retired last March due to health issues. The Seaquarium faced ownership changes and scandals, eventually being acquired by the Dolphin Company in 2021 amidst animal neglect accusations.

The Southern resident orcas, including Lolita, typically spend summers and falls in Washington State’s Puget Sound and have been on the endangered species list since 2005, recognized by the National Marine Fisheries Service. Jim Irsay expressed his support for Lolita’s relocation on “The Pat McAfee Show,” saying, “She’s healthy, I’ve got the money, let’s move her.” Despite her declining ability to swim long distances or hunt on her own, there is hope for her reunion with her mother.

Additionally, consideration is being given to relocating a Pacific white-sided dolphin named Lii to keep Lolita company during her journey back to her natural habitat.
