The Chicago Cubs tried their best to acquire Kaepernick and drafted him in the 43rd round of the 2009 draft. Kaepernick had not played baseball since high school, but he still got drafted three years later.

Cubs crosschecker Sam Hughes said, “I looked at his arm action in a number of [football] games and talked to people who saw him play baseball in high school. The way he competed as the Reno quarterback and his athleticism led us to the belief he could be a good professional pitcher.” Kaepernick in his high-school days was a talented pitcher but later played as a quarterback for the University of Nevada.

Hughes further said, “We would have waited for him to finish college and also would have paid for the rest of his education. He was very direct and honest about his goal of becoming an NFL quarterback.”

While he was at the University, Kaepernick was completely shocked when he got a deal with the Chicago Cubs. Hughes had many conversations with Kaepernick and his dad, but the star QB always wanted to play in the NFL.
