Colin Kaepernick has been out of a job for 5 years. After a rollercoaster ride to the Superbowl where he dominated in the playoffs, things went downhill for the quarterback professionally. The team went 12-4 with him in the next season, which got him a huge 6-year extension in 2014. But since 2017, the former 49ers QB has not stepped on the turf for an NFL team. 

In 2016, Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the National Anthem to send across a message of social justice. It sparked a huge debate and controversy ensued.

At the end of it all, Kaepernick found himself without a job. He has made several attempts at coming back to the gridiron but achieved little success. This week again the QB put out a video trying to show the league that he has still got what it takes to compete. 

Eminem Kneels During Halftime Show

Recently, the famous rapper Eminem headlined the Super Bowl Halftime show. During his performance, he knelt for the better of one minute. It is speculated that it was a tribute to Kapernick. The NFL said they were aware of the fact that this was part of Slim Shady’s routine. 

And now we have Kaepernick getting out there once again, auditioning for a role in the NFL as best as he can. The ball is still in the teams’ court, remains to be seen if any of them will make the call. But it is not a stretch to think that the former QB was charged up after watching such a great rapper and pop culture icon, paying tribute to him.

This is by no means his first try at a comeback. The QB was reportedly even invited by NFL in 2019 to showcase his skills in a workout session. But even there too many things went wrong that drove the focus away from his game.

And that’s the main point here. His game. The QB was a gifted performer with the potential to turn it up in big games. . And as we have seen, the list of teams that require a quarterback is pretty long. And Kapernick offers the exact set of skills that today’s QB ought to have to remain relevant.

A dual-threat quarterback could help out plenty of teams. Kyler Murray and Lamar Jackson have proved how good it looks when it works. Yes, Colin Kaepernick is in his mid-30s. But we have seen Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers pushing the age limits of QBs to inhuman levels. So it should not be surprising that Kapernick could join a good offense and instantly start adding value.

Although, just a speck of doubt tarnishes an idea. And the fact that Colin Kaepernick has not taken the field in 5 years puts serious doubts over his comeback. Well, if it ever happens, it would make for one of the best comeback stories in the history of the NFL.
