Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been out of action since 2016. Since then, he tried to make a comeback many times, but he failed to get a contract with an NFL team. Recently, there were plenty of rumors about him returning to his former team, the Niners, after they suffered a big setback with injuries. Notably, Kaepernick also suffered from many injuries during his last season with the Niners, which was not the only reason he was out of the league for this long.

Back in 2016, he made a stance to kneel during the national anthem, which garnered plenty of criticism from fans and experts. Coincidentally, no team has signed him since his stance. Spike Lee opens up about the Colin Kaepernick situation
In a recent interview, Lee revealed how Kaepernick is spending his exile from the NFL these days. “He still works out six days a week just waiting for that phone call to return to the NFL. He took the knee to bring awareness…“
The legendary director also felt that he could not compare his life with Kaepernick, as the former NFL player had more obstacles. “[Kaepernick] has sacrificed his career because he said we must bring attention to racial injustice. He took the knee in 2016… Many teams around the world, like England, now take the knee. But Colin Kaepernick is still out of work,” Lee further said.

As per his comments, he still feels bad about Kaepernick not getting any team in the NFL after trying to bring change to society. Could we see Kaepernick playing for the Niners again this season?
Speaking of teams not calling Kaepernick, the scenario could change for the 35-year-old former Niners quarterback. Earlier this Sunday, the 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo broke his foot, which will, unfortunately, rule him out for the entire season.

Notably, the Niners are one of the top teams in the NFC and are currently sitting at the top of the NFC West. Certainly, they are already looking forward to the playoffs. Moreover, many picked them to reach the Super Bowl this season as well, after they acquired Christian McCaffrey. Now, they have lost their starting quarterback, Garoppolo. And their other QB Trey Lance will also miss the season due to injury.
Former Panthers QB Baker Mayfield is expected to be claimed on waivers today. The team that claims him will inherit the remaining $1.35 million on his contract. Mayfield is unlikely to land in SF. “We look into everything but that would surprise me right now,” said Kyle Shanahan.

Right now, the Niners are trusting the rookie QB, Brock Purdy, with the ball; however, if they acquire Kaepernick, it will be a game-changer for the Niners and their Super Bowl chances.
