The Cleveland Browns have just spoiled the contract signing between Baltimore Ravens and quarterback Lamar Jackson. Though Ravens and Jackson both wanted to keep their pact scenario ‘private,’ things couldn’t be kept that way ultimately.

On September 11th, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen tweeted about the absolute details of the proposed contract and the disagreement that followed. Jackson reportedly declined a $290 million 5-year extension with the Ravens, including $133 million fully guaranteed at signing.

Does Lamar Jackson want the Deshaun Watson contract?

What prompted Jackson to act in this manner? The staggering sum was undoubtedly greater than that of the other two superstar quarterbacks, Kyler Murray ($103.3 million) and Russell Wilson ($124 million). But, with Cleveland having signed Deshaun Watson for $230 million fully guaranteed, Jackson wanted one as well.

His fans believe that, based on his performance as a league MVP, Lamar is not unrealistic in demanding a ‘Watson-like’ contract. “133 not enough, anything short of 200 don’t even call the phone. Lamar has leverage, the ravens will be poverty without him. They know it and he does too.” A ‘Lamar-fan’ writes on Twitter.

The current conflict between the Ravens and Jackson perplexes fans. “Jackson is not as good as Wilson or Watson. He better get paid now before it’s too late”, another fan writes. At 25, Lamar feels they should pay him the same as Watson based on his on-field actions. Some Twitterati feels that “Cleveland should never be allowed to shape the market, they ruin everything”.

Raven still excited for the 2022 season with LJ8

The GM of Baltimore Ravens Eric DeCosta accepted they are still to come to a negotiable offer. The official statement read, “We greatly appreciate how he has handled this process and we are excited about our team with Lamar leading the way. We will continue to work towards a long-term contract after the season, but for now we are looking forward to a successful 2022 campaign.”

During the negotiations, Lamar had the assistance of the NFL Players Association. “The union advised that based on performance and age (25) he was justified to demand a fully guaranteed contract if that’s what he wanted, sources added,” Chris Mortensen tweets.

However, Ravens officials are currently solely focused on a successful 2022 season. After sealing their first win of the season against the Jets, the Ravens are off to a good start and will hopefully try to seal the deal with the quarterback after claiming him to the franchise tag next season.
