Now to make the league more competitive and unbiased, the league has a salary cap in place so that not only the teams with big banks keep winning the league.

The salary cap is not just about signing players and spending on their salaries, but teams have to look out for dead money hits. Dead money hits are the money owed to a player after a team has traded or released them.

Recently, Spotrac shared a list of the top 15 highest single-season dead cash hits in NFL history. Out of the 15 players mentioned in the list, four players came from Cleveland Browns that were released or traded to another team.

Browns traded Odell Beckham Jr. in 2019, taking on a $90 million deal he had signed with the New York Giants. The Browns released him in 2021, and Beckham was scheduled to get $15 million in the next two seasons. After the release, the team owed him $7 million and was left with a $15,500,000 dead cap hit.

The Browns released Brock Osweiler in 2017 and paid him the full $16 million that was due. In 2016, Osweiler signed a four-year $72 million deal with the Houston Texans and was traded to the Browns in 2017. The Browns after the trade were left with a $15,225,000 dead cap hit.

The most recent trade that the Browns made was of QB Baker Mayfield. Mayfield is due $18.9 million this season. The Browns will pay him $10.5 million while the Panthers will pay him $5.5 million. The trade deal left the Browns with a $10,500,000 dead cap hit.

Kenny Britt signed a 4-year, $32.5 million contract with the Browns during the 2017 offseason. After being released in the same year, Britt left Cleveland with a $10,500,000 dead cap hit.

According to the list, Cleveland now has over $51 million in dead cash hit by these four players.
