NFL franchise Tampa Bay Buccaneers seems to be back in business as they re-signed their star wide receiver Chris Godwin while welcoming back quarterback Tom Brady out of retirement. Though there remains a determination coursing through the entire organization with Brady’s return, there remains a lot of work to field a challenging team around him.

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, Godwin signed a 3-year, $60 million deal with the franchise. He was an important player before Brady arrived in 2020 and has only stepped up as one of his key outlet passing options.

The 2019 Pro Bowl selection was on the injury list during their premature end to the 2021 NFL campaign as they lost to the eventual Super Bowl champions, the Los Angeles Rams.

He was also on course to another amazing season as he did end up recording 1,103 receiving yards, 5 TDs, and a career-high 98 receptions. While the player might have been considering moving away from Tampa, Brady’s comeback has turned some heads. The move also helps the Buccaneers‘ cap space situation as he is signed up on a long-term deal.

Is Chris Godwin signing the beginning of a process?

The franchise has a lot to do in terms of shaping the roster for the upcoming season in 2022 as they look to retain most of the NFC South winning roster. The 2021 season had its moments, but it plagued the team with players out injured.

Even GM Jason Licht seems to be hinting at trying to maintain sustained success while not losing too many picks and creating salary cap problems.

Licht did share his goal to keep all the key players and possibly bring them back for their 2022 campaign. The franchise has been reluctant to properly use the free-agent market, while only making 2 notable signings from the open market.

Tampa has close to 19 players who are free agents and might make limited forays to look for players on the outside market due to their tight cap situations.

The use of the franchise tag by the Buccaneers to retain Godwin was a no-brainer move from the franchise for a second consecutive season. The team has already brought back 3 of their starters in their offensive line by re-signing them as their first order of business. There remain other players who will require the Brady motivation to come back next season.
