Debates about the NFL MVP award are in full swing right now. And the player mostly talked about, is the Kansas City Chiefs’ star man, Patrick Mahomes. His dominant performance this season has left little doubt as to his suitability to win the MVP award this season. However, Mahomes seems to have a rival contender, and underdog, from within his team. And it’s none other than Travis Kelce!

The Kelce-Mahomes bond has been the driving force for the Chiefs this season. The duo kick into overdrive anytime the Chiefs need a miracle boost to make it through to win. Case in point, their win against the Los Angeles Chargers last Sunday. Mahomes’ last-minute touchdown pass to Kelce effectively gave them the lead of the game with only 40 seconds to go.
Kelce, on his own, has been phenomenal this season as well. Although he plays as a tight end, his dynamic nature has allowed him to take on the traits of a wide receiver. In fact, he is Mahomes’ first choice whenever the team is in a scoring position. His stats, by far, make him one of the greatest players in the history of the sport.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling places Travis Kelce above Mahomes in MVP race
Bucs’ receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling shook the NFL community by presenting Kelce as a choice against the popular Mahomes. But in a QB-driven league, it becomes difficult for some to fathom a tight end as an MVP. There has rarely been a non-QB MVP since its inception in 1957.
Nevertheless, Valdes-Scantling’s tweet sent the Twitter community into overdrive. Fans began digging into the history books to find records of non-QB MVPs. Debates on who deserves it more, and how this might benefit non-deserving candidates, filled the thread.
Because I definitely know a guy.

No. And wide receivers never won MVP either. Jerry Rice should’ve won it in the 80s but he never did. But we did have a kicker when it in 1983 during that strike year so there’s that…

Dolphins fans feel the same way. I hope we get to see a Chiefs-Dolphins super bowl

Nope. Neither has a WR.

Yes he did.
But, if we want to get super technical, Don Hutson was an E. WR wasn't a position when he was playing. And he also won before the AP started naming the MVPs, but yes he did win two.

The last non-QB to win a MVP was Adrian Peterson in 2012 and to get that he had a 2,097 yd season. Which is pretty insane but he was considered one of the best RBs in NFL history

@tkelce should without a doubt. No tight end consistently has done what he has. Every year he hangs with WR records as a TE. KillaTrav!!!

Whether Kelce wins MVP or not, he is certainly in line to get himself another Super Bowl Ring. The Chiefs sit comfortably at the top of their division and will be the number 1 seed in the AFC as things stand. With only Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills standing in their way, it is looking ever more likely that Mahomes will be able to lead Kansas to a Super Bowl once again.
