In an exciting showdown at Arrowhead Stadium, the Detroit Lions began the season with a bang, striking a blow to the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Chiefs, in a 21-20 victory. This win not only put an end to the Chiefs’ eight-game Week 1 winning streak but also set the stage for an exciting NFL season ahead.

The match featured standout performances of David Montgomery scoring his maiden touchdown for the franchise and rookie Brian Branch making a game-changing 50-yard interception touchdown, bringing the Lions close to their triumph.

Leading up to the opener, the Chiefs were not in their full form due to the absence of key pieces like Travis Kelce and Chris Jones in the lineup. However, the Lions’ victory came as a surprise to many, including a Chicago legend.

The Lions took an old rival by surprise

NFL legend Dick Butkus, a former Hall of Famer for the Chicago Bears, did not anticipate the Lions performing so well. The 80-year-old took to his official X (formerly Twitter) handle hours before the Lions took the field against the reigning champions and wrote, “I got excited that the NFL starts today, but then I realized it’s the Detroit Lions.” It seems that the former linebacker still hasn’t lost his edge over his old foes.

Dick Butkus’ cheeky jab fell flat with the ‘unexpected’ victory of the Lions. However, Butkus was also looking forward to seeing a player in the Lions’ lineup in action. The octogenarian posted another tweet about who he was excited to see in action. “I am excited to see one player today – Jack Campbell – from the @Lions. He was the 2022 College Butkus Award Winner from @HawkeyeFootball, playing his first NFL game at KC tonight! Make it count!”, he wrote.

While the victory would have taken Dick Butkus by surprise, some from the franchise base saw it coming.

Some saw the Detroit Lions’ victory coming

However, this tweet did not age well when, in an exhilarating turn of events, Dan Campbell’s gang claimed victory. The head coach appeared unfazed, almost as if he had expected the triumph all along the way. He said, “We expected to win this game. We came in here and knew what we needed to do, and we knew it wasn’t going to be easy, and we did that. Really, what it means is that’s one win. That’s one. So, we’ve got to clean up our issues. It hurt us on some stuff, and be ready for Seattle in 10 days.”

The franchise has had a promising start. The victory must taste even sweeter for the Lions as they had not won a season opener since 2017. Riding the high of this win, they are going all in for the upcoming days.
