By converting most of his base salary to signing bonus and adding 3 void years, SF has created nearly $10m in cap room.

Meanwhile, Charvarius Ward agreed to a restructured contract with the 49ers, converting his 3-year, $40.5 million deal into a signing bonus. This lowered the team’s salary cap for 2023 and spread the bonus out over the remaining years of the contract. To make room for this, the 49ers added void years in 2024, 2025, and 2026, which still must be accounted for in the salary cap. Generated $10 million in cap space for the current year, even though it will cost the team more in the future.
