Andy Dalton moved to Dallas Cowboys on a one-year deal worth $7 million. It was confirmed late on Saturday night. As a result of this deal, only one big-name quarterback remains a free agent. This is the 2015 NFL MVP Cam Newton. Field Yates put out a Tweet saying “And now we wait for the last major QB domino to fall: Cam Newton.”

Cam Newton free agency spell continues

It seems unlikely that the “last major QB domino” will fall anytime soon. This is because, as per NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the 30-year-old wishes to be a starter in the 2020 NFL season. However, barring any major injury, it seems unlikely that any franchise will add Newton to their books as a starter. This is proving to be the biggest stumbling block as Newton is coming off consecutive injury-hit campaigns.

He went down with a shoulder injury in 2018 and had a Lisfranc fracture last season. The Panthers placed him on the injury list last season and released him after signing Teddy Bridgewater.

“I never asked for it!-“Cam Newton looks set to spend some time in free agency

Another report by Ian Rapoport indicated that the Chicago Bears and Los Angeles Chargers were potential trade destinations. However, they showed no interest. This is because like The Panthers they too would have concerns over the 2011 top draft pick’s fitness. As a result, they would be reluctant to sign him sans an in-person medical examination.

Jameis Winston was released by Tampa Bay Buccaneers despite being the 2019 league leader in passing yards. His misfiring throws resulted in him tossing 30 interceptions. Winston was replaced by Tom Brady. However, he agreed to a pay cut and signed with New Orleans Saints to act as a backup to Drew Brees. Here he also knows that a good season or two can see him take over the reins when the 41-year-old eventually walks away.

Dalton will be back to Dak Prescott at the AT&T Stadium. He signed a one-year deal but knows a good season on a strong team can propel him into the reckoning for future trade windows.

Will Cam Newton realize this and opt for a backup role? Given his injury history and lack of interest in a trade he certainly should grab any role and use it to prove himself.
