The Packers have had the good fortune of having two great quarterbacks back to back. Before Cheeseheads saw Aaron Rodgers and his brilliance, they saw the brilliance of Brett Favre. Favre was an absolute beast and a very creative passer, possibly the most creative one to ever play in the league. Before Rodgers came, he held the responsibility of being the Packers’ hopes in playoffs and he even went on to win a Super Bowl for them. However, the Packers missed a huge opportunity to make Favre the QB half of a deadly offensive duo, and the surprising reason for this was Rodgers himself.

The Packers could’ve partnered Favre up with legendary wide receiver, Randy Moss. They were even ready to trade for him and ship off players. The only hiccup was that the player they had to send away would’ve been Rodgers and it seems like that was not up for debate.

Was Aaron Rodgers the obstacle to making Favre part of a dynamic duo?

In 2007, the Packers had the opportunity to create a team that would’ve been centered around a powerful offense. While they already had a legendary QB in Brett Favre, the Packers could’ve used a brilliant WR by his side. And such an opportunity did come by in 2007, just a year before Rodgers took the reins from Favre.

There was a proposed trade with the then-Oakland Raiders that would’ve gotten the Packers a lethal weapon in Randy Moss, one of the best wide receivers in the league at that time. Moss is widely considered one of the best WRs of all time. In 2007, he was one of the most touted players in the league. If the Packers had gone forward with their deal, they would have given up Rodgers to the Raiders and received Randy Moss. This trade would’ve put Randy Moss alongside Favre at the height of both their peaks, giving the Packers an unstoppable duo.

Alas, the Packers never went ahead with such a trade and retained Rodgers. The very next year, Rodgers took over for Favre as the starting QB and the rest as they say, was history. Moss and Favre were united eventually in 2010 with the Vikings. However, they were both past their peaks at this point.

Randy and Brett: The Dynamic Duo That Could’ve Been?

While they didn’t play together in 2007 for the Packers, they were united when they both played for one of Green Bay’s biggest rivals: The Minnesota Vikings. While they only played 4 games together, they showed everyone what a brilliant duo they made on the field. In just four games Moss recorded a brilliant 174 receiving yards, carving out 13 receives. He also went on to score 2 touchdowns with 25 targets. All in all, the duo showed fans just a glimpse of what they could’ve been if they had been given the chance to play together.

While the dreams of Favre and Moss remained just that, the Packers got lucky after retaining the talented Rodgers. Although Rodgers is no longer with the Packers and is following Favre’s journey by playing for the Jets, he has had a massive impact on the Cheeseheads.
