While the wait for the upcoming season is almost ever, some of the teams recently concluded their minicamp training last Thursday. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, was seen dominating the OTAs with his teammates and possible new recruits. Moreover, it seems that the 2x MVP has recovered from his ankle injury and is ready to fight it out in the upcoming season once more.
Although there were a lot of new faces trying for the roster, some of the familiar faces were not to be seen. Mahomes’ trusted teammate, Chris Jones, who has led the team to Super Bowl victories two times, was absent due to rather serious internal matters.

The leader of the Chiefs’ defensive team, Chris Jones, has made a significant impact on the team’s defensive roster to be as efficient as the offense. He personally had an incredible season last year with his highest-ever tackle count and also matching the highest sacks record from 2016. However, the defensive tackle still faces some drawbacks with his contract despite his peak performance last year. After the DT’s absence from the last day of training camp, a reporter asked the Chief’s QB about the whole situation. Mahomes didn’t make a fuss about the whole situation and wholeheartedly believes that Jones is not messing around in the offseason and he will come back only stronger.
The head coach of the team, Andy Reid, was asked about Jones’ situation as well, to which he replied that he was sure the DT will show up at training. He didn’t seem to be worried about it at all. However, it wasn’t the case, as the team’s final training camp day ended, Jones was nowhere to be seen. Several reports indicate that Jones is in the midst of negotiating a new deal with the team as this is the last season of his contract.

The Chiefs can penalize Jones with a whopping $100k fine
The 2022 First-team All-pro extended his contract with the Chiefs in 2020 for a 4-year period with a base salary of $19.5 million. Although Jones is one of the best defensive tackles in the league right now, he’s nowhere close to being paid as much as other reputable defensive tackles. He stands in the seventh position in terms of annual pay as a DT. Therefore, he is negotiating a new deal with the team and also has been absent for similar reasons. However, as Jones is still in contract with the team, he could be penalized a staggering $100,000 per one missed training.

The Chiefs are obviously in dire need of a ruthless DT like Jones on their roster, and it’s highly likely that they will release him for a few seasons. There seem to be some hurdles in the team’s way this season, but they have managed to recruit several hopeful prospects to the roster. The offense roster has witnessed significant changes as well, with newly brought-in, Jawan Taylor and Donovan Smith providing superior guards to the star quarterback.
