The New England Patriots announced on Friday that their iconic throwback jersey will make a return this year. The Red Throwback Jersey is all set to be worn after a decade since it was last used in 2012, according to the Patriots’ Hall of Fame.

Following a change in regulations in 2013, the Patriots could no longer wear their iconic uniform. Since then, NFL Teams have only had permission to use one pair of helmets every season. Changes between two different colored ones became outlawed. As a result, it stopped the throwback outfits like the ones used by New England.

The New England Patriots to sport their iconic red jersey once again

The Patriots haven’t said whether they’ll wear the white ‘Pat Patriot’ helmet, but it’s a safe assumption that they might. After the new rules adopted by the league in 2013, we saw fewer throwbacks helmets on the field in recent years, both in New England and elsewhere.

However, starting in 2022, the league will allow clubs to use throwback helmets as long as it properly fits them for each player and fulfills all of the same safety criteria as the primary helmets.

To wear throwback helmets in 2022, teams have to apply in advance this year. The NFL hasn’t revealed the teams that have permission to wear throwback helmets, but with one of the most popular throwback helmets in the league, the Patriots would be a perfect option.

The Patriots had a red-and-white uniform from 1960 until 1993. It was when ‘Pat Patriot’ was replaced by the ‘Flying Elvis’ that has adorned the team’s helmets ever since. The color scheme was first modified to blue-and-silver until another update before the 2000 season. Between 2000 and 2019, New England’s main colors and uniform bases were navy and silver.
