Colin Kaepernick has strongly expressed his desire to return to the NFL. He has been out of the league for close to five years. He has recently been looking for franchises to work out with and sign him on. However, at present, not many teams have an urgent requirement for a first-choice QB. But one of the teams that Colin could fit in, and there’s a requirement, would be the Cleveland Browns.

While the Browns have not mentioned looking for a first choice or backup QB explicitly, their QB1 position is in a conundrum. And now there is a bizarre theory that has come up that Kaepernick would be the perfect fit for the Browns as a backup QB, at least, in this moment in time.
What is the theory linking Colin Kaepernick and the Browns?
The idea emerged during a discussion on longtime NFL journalist Jason Whitlock’s YouTube show. Host Whitlock and guest Steve Kim were discussing the QB situation at the Browns this season. With the situation uncertain for the franchise, Kim came up with a bizarre theory of how the Cleveland-based franchise could solve its conundrum. The solution would help the Browns not only solve its QB issues in the short term, but also create some good PR around their team, as per Steve Kim.
Kim seemed to suggest that the Browns could sign Colin Kaepernick as its backup QB. This is because the Browns have already signed Deshaun Watson as their starting QB. They also have their previous starter, Baker Mayfield on the roster. Such a trade would be to both the Browns’ and Kaepernick’s advantage.
There may be two situations in which such an arrangement would help the franchise. First, until Deshaun’s absence or suspension, Mayfield could play QB1 while Kaepernick provides the backup. The alternative situation may be that until Deshaun’s suspension, the former 49ers QB runs the offense. In such a case, the Browns could trade Mayfield for other offensive players or new draft picks.

What has Kaepernick been doing so far?
Kaepernick played his last game in the NFL in early 2017. Post that, he focused on his activism and work among oppressed communities through various initiatives and his organization Know Your rights Camp. The former 49er also donated $1 million, plus proceeds from his 2016 jersey sales, to organizations that work with oppressed communities.
While Kaepernick’s return to the NFL seems to be in doubt, this is one way in which the QB can make his return to the league. The idea, despite its bizarre nature, does offer a way out for both Kaepernick and the Browns. What do you think about this out of the box trade idea?
