The New England Patriots OC room is left void after coach Josh McDaniel paved his way to the Las Vegas Raiders. The OC was one of the most successful assets for the franchise. Interestingly, Bill Belichick hasn’t found a new play-caller for the young unit led by Mac Jones in the upcoming season. In the current 2022 OTA’s, the Patriots were operating without an offensive coordinator. Even though many weeks are still left for the season to begin, Belichick may have to weigh his options ahead of it.

Matt Patricia and Joe Judge are viewed as the favorites to decorate the post. More specifically, Patricia is speculated to secure the role of a primary play-caller. He was on a walkie-talkie during the entire Wednesday practice session and seemed to be advising plays to Mac Jones. However, there is still obscurity behind all the speculations. Even players and co-captains aren’t ready to admit the exact scenario inside the locker room.

“I’m just trying to work, get back out there, do my best,” co-captain David Andrews said on Wednesday. He threw up his hands as if to say, “Don’t ask me. I’m not trying to get into trouble.” Andrews added, per the Boston Globe. Similarly, there is also a possibility that the trio consisting of Belichick, Patricia, and Judge may together coordinate to control the offensive side.
When compared with the experience and abilities of McDaniels, Judge and Patricia both are way behind him. If not as offensive coordinators, both of them have enough experience as a coordinator for special teams and the defensive side.
What did Bill Belichick say on the matter?
While players and fans are equally curious to know about the Patriots’ new OC, Belichick was cold and composed about the issue. Speaking to the reporters in May, he said, ” Do we have titles? Yeah, look, there’s a lot of jobs that we have to do, we’re all working on those things now but — it’s May,”.

Moreover, the 70-year-old didn’t reveal much about a potential replacement. “They’ll change in June, they’ll change in August, they’ll change in September. So, we’ll evolve it to the things that we need to do. If you’re asking about game plans, we’re months away from that — months. … Months away. Months. What plays are we calling? Minicamp plays?” he added to his speech.

Even though many suitable candidates for the post are available in the market, Belichick will look for the best fit to inherit the legacy of McDaniels. Otherwise, moving ahead without an OC might prove disastrous, especially for a young quarterback Mac Jones in the upcoming 2022 season.
