The Baltimore Ravens and Lamar Jackson look well beyond the point of salvaging their relationship. While LJ is set to take his QB talents elsewhere, the Ravens have a few potential choices to pick from. They can trade up to land a top passer from this year’s draft class or they can rope in former league MVP Cam Newton. Former NFL GM Michael Lombardi thinks Newton is a capable leader, whether from the sidelines or on the field.

A few weeks ago, convincing Cam Newton to take a backup role in his return to the NFL would have been an uphill task. However, the former No. 1 overall draft pick has since come around to a more negotiation-friendly mood. And according to Lombardi, the Ravens should capitalize on that.

Can Cam Newton replace Lamar Jackson in Baltimore?

There is no doubt that the Ravens with Lamar are a way stronger unit than without. However, injury concerns and lack of consistent postseason success pushed the Ravens to designate their QB to a non-exclusive franchise tag worth $32.416 million. Lamar sought a trade from the organization on March 2, according to his Twitter revelation. Meanwhile, after almost two years away from the gridiron, former Carolina Panthers passer Cam Newton is desperately looking for a franchise.

I love Cam. Cam is a dynamic leader. He’s an alpha male. When he walks into the room, people are going to follow him. So that becomes a challenge for the backup quarterback because he’s gonna create a following,” Michael Lombardi said on The Pat McAfee Show. “But if I were in Baltimore and I was in this Lamar situation knowing what I know about where this could end up or where it’s going to go, I think I would sign Cam.”

Lombardi has held director of personnel, recruiting coordinator, and senior personnel executive roles. Naturally, his words carry weight when it comes to choosing the right guy. However, can the two superstar quarterbacks work together in harmony, wearing purple and black?

Are any compatibility issues likely to surface for a Cam-Lamar partnership?

In the unlikely scenario that 2019 NFL MVP Lamar Jackson doesn’t receive any new offers from teams and is forced to continue with Baltimore, the Cam arrangement could still work out. In his latest video, Newton gave a small list of quarterbacks in the league he would be willing to back up. Besides names like Deshaun Watson and Aaron Rodgers, dual-threat Action Jackson also made the list. “There ain’t 32 guys that are better than me. But I also know I could also be a backup. And I’m willing to be a backup,” Cam said on his YouTube channel on Wednesday.

Having two Heisman Trophy winners as their first two quarterbacks can certainly work wonders for Baltimore next season. If only the Ravens could come to a mutual understanding with Lamar, the Purple Rain games would have been a sight for the sore eyes in 2023. What do you think of Lombardi’s suggestion?
