Baker Mayfield will have his statue unveiled in Oklahoma during half-time of the spring game. The former Sooners quarterback is happy about the tremendous honor bestowed upon him and looks forward to witnessing the glory on April 23rd this season.

The 26-year-old Browns QB has now added another feather to his cap to become one of the few players to achieve this feat. The Heisman Champion shared a thank you message to his parent football club and wished to join the ceremony with his family and teammates.

Baker Mayfield thanks Sooners for bestowing the honor upon him

The Heisman Trophy is one of the most prestigious awards a college football player can achieve in his career, and Baker Mayfield did that effortlessly in 2017 for the Oklahoma Sooners.

He became the 6th player in the history of his college to win the trophy and raise the Sooners in the record books of college football. He passed for 4,627 yards and 43 touchdowns while leading Oklahoma to a Big 12 title and the College Football Playoff that campaign.

After five years of his incredible achievement, the Sooners have decided to honor the former QB in a grand ceremony. Reverting to their gesture, Mayfield thanked the organization with a warm tweet, “I can’t think of a better way to celebrate this tremendous honor than alongside my family, teammates, and Sooner Nation…” he tweeted.

Mayfield made his entry into the NFL with a 5-year-draft from the Cleveland Browns. However, he is allegedly parting ways after playing for the team as the starting quarterback for the past four years.

Mayfield is unable to find a new home

The disgruntled quarterback remains without a sense of direction in the wake of Deshaun Watson being acquired by the team. The Watson-Browns blockbuster trade was all filled with a lot of miscommunications and confusion. During the team’s pursuit of acquiring the Texans QB, Mayfield posted a thanks message to all the Cleveland fans citing an imminent exit from the team.

The same day the news broke out that Watson will be playing for the franchise; however, the abrupt cancellation of the deal foiled all their (Cleveland Browns) plans. Meanwhile, Mayfield was requesting a trade from the Browns, but the management did not release him.

Then just a day later, the Watson trade with the Browns was officially declared, and Mayfield’s release was considered the next step by the management.

But till now, Mayfield stays with the team with no clarity on his future and the team’s ambitions. One of the main reasons for the team holding him is Mayfield’s salary cap. He is expected to receive nearly $18.86 million annually this season, and no team is willing to hire him at this salary.

Moreover, the team is looking for a first-round pick in his exchange which is quite gloomy at this point. Well, a decision on this matter is expected to be released soon!
