Carolina Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield suffered an ankle injury during the first half against the 49ers in Week 5. Although he returned in the second half, he could not continue for long, as backup quarterback Phillip Walker entered the game.

At first, the injury did not look serious, as Mayfield was seen walking after the game. However, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the injury could be serious, which could bring more bad news for the Panthers.

Baker Mayfield could miss plenty of time because of an ankle injury

As per Rapoport, the 27-year-old Panthers quarterback has suffered an ankle sprain. However, there is still a question mark over his recovery time, as the results of various tests will determine when Mayfield will play again. In the meantime, the backup quarterback Phillip Walker will take his place on the team.

After Sunday’s game against the Niners, Mayfield talked about his injury as he said, “A little painful right now… I’m not real sure exactly what it is. We’ll examine that tomorrow and find out. So right now I’m managing the pain and learning to step in the boot.”

It is worth noting that Mayfield joined the Panthers back in July after spending four years with the Browns. Since his move, he has not performed up to the mark, as he has thrown 962 yards in total so far with four touchdowns and four interceptions. Moreover, the crowd heavily booed the quarterback during the 49ers game, where he recorded no touchdowns in a heavy 37-15 defeat.

Safe to say, the match against the Rams will be a must-win for the Cardiac Cats. Meanwhile, their head coach, Matt Rhule, was fired after the loss; he talked about scoring a lot of points in order to win. Hence, they have to improve their offense along with their defense; last Sunday, they gave up 37 points against the Niners. On the other hand, changing the quarterback might change their fortunes. At least that’s what the Panthers fans will be hoping. Do you think they will win?
