Travis Kelce seems to have once again found himself at the center of controversy. The talented tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs is celebrated for his exceptional athleticism, off-field humor, and candid statements. However, his remarks occasionally stir up unintended controversy, whether through his own words or how they are portrayed by others.

Such is the case with the recent incident involving Kelce, where his genuine feelings of being ‘underpaid‘ became the catalyst for a dramatic dispute with a prominent NFL insider. While his trophy-smashing incident marked one of his most significant controversies this year, this episode could inadvertently become the second largest on his list. But what was the whole story?

Recently, in an interview with Vanity Fair, Travis Kelce openly discussed his thoughts on his contract and potential earnings. He acknowledged contemplating the possibility of earning more money if he pushed for a higher salary. However, he emphasized that winning was ultimately more important to him. Unfortunately, an NFL reporter named Dov Kleiman portrayed Kelce’s remarks misleadingly through a tweet, stating, “Update: #Chiefs star TE Travis Kelce says he’s underpaid, expresses desire for higher salary to his agents.” The actual story, revealed by the Vanity Fair, was quite different. Kelce explained, “My managers and agents love to tell me how underpaid I am.”

He continued that whenever he discusses the possibility of seeking a higher salary, his agents advise him to approach the Chiefs organization. Kelce also expressed surprise at seeing Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill earning approximately 30 million dollars per year, which he perceived as two to three times more than his annual income. However, Kelce made it clear that while he finds the free market intriguing, winning remains his primary focus.

He concluded by affirming, “I love winning. I love the situation I’m in.” This controversy sparked a flurry of online reactions, with fans expressing their frustration towards the reporter for misrepresenting his intentions regarding financial matters.

Travis Kelce vs Tyreek Hill

Kelce has amassed an impressive $64.8 million in career earnings by the end of the 2022 season, with a current net worth of $20 million, as reported by Celebrity Net Worth. His current contract grants him an average annual salary of approximately $14.3 million. However, according to Vanity Fair, his upcoming season’s base salary of $11.25 million will place him 54th among NFL players in terms of salary rankings.

These numbers pale in comparison to the substantial contract Tyreek Hill, a former Chiefs receiver, secured after his trade to the Miami Dolphins in 2022. Hill signed a four-year extension worth a staggering $120 million, including an astounding $72.2 million guaranteed, solidifying his position as the highest-paid receiver in NFL history. Notably, that offseason witnessed seven other receivers signing contracts with annual salaries exceeding $23.5 million.
