The veteran wide receiver for the New England Patriots, Julian Edelman, decided to hang up his cleats in April 2021. The long-time Patriots WR announced the news officially in an emotional video. According to an NFL Insider, the team terminated the contract of Edelman because he failed a physical. However, there is more to it. The WR saw something terrible which led him to retire.

The 2020 season was not an easy one for him. A nagging knee injury restricted him from playing for most of the season. He only played six games. Because of the injury, the Super Bowl-winning WR could not also play in the 2021 season. Eventually, his retirement followed. The other aspect which pushed him to retirement was watching his game films.

On an appearance on The Ryen Russillo Podcast, Julian Edelman talked about how watching himself play on film disappointed him. According to him, he did not play at his 100 percent. “Atrocious. That’s honestly why I retired,” said the retired New England WR. Edelman realized that he no longer was the same receiver he once was in his youth.

The impressive career of Julian Edelman

In his eleven seasons with the New England Patriots, Julian Edelman achieved three Super Bowl titles. In Super Bowl LIII, he became the MVP. The former teammate of Tom Brady caught the greatest catch of all time.

Julian Edelman’s NFL career had been an excellent one. He was an invaluable part of one of the most impactful teams in the NFL. Edelman was an outstanding WR. He racked in 620 catches for 6,822 yards and 39 touchdowns.

In his 12-tear-old career, he dealt with numerous injuries. He sustained an ACL tear because of which he missed the entire 2017 season, then surgery for a shoulder ailment in 202o piled up.

Because of many injuries, Edelman could feel his advancing age becoming a problem. Also, he felt like he was becoming a veteran player who he defeated on the field. “The blood was in the water. Guys were going to come after me. I had to get out.”
