The New York Jets are in quite a pickle as their desired quarterback for 2023, Aaron Rodgers, has reneged on his promise. He promised to not hold any franchise hostage as he decided his future in the National Football League. But it looks like he did just that.
39-year-old Rodgers has failed to inform the Jets of his intentions before the ‘legal tampering’ period of this year’s free agency began on March 13, as he still contemplates between retirement, New York, and a 19th-year return to the Green Bay Packers.

From the moment, 4x league MVP Aaron Rodgers announced his intentions of exploring options away from Wisconsin at the end of last season, the Gang Green were always in the forefront to land him in the pocket. However, the deliberations could have gone into overtime as Rodgers missed the deadline to inform the Jets of whether he plans to join them this year.

The NFL’s legal tampering period is a window before the actual open market proceedings begin on March 15, where teams can discuss the various aspects of the player contract and deal, without actually signing one. And with the Jets’ sole focus on A-Rod, they might be in hot waters now, as the other options like Derek Carr and Jimmy Garoppolo are already off the market.

The Jets traveled to Malibu, California, last week to have a sit-down and dinner with Aaron and his team. And they seemed heavily optimistic after the meeting, according to ESPN’s Dianna Russini. However, with Rodgers undecided, the Jets couldn’t get the necessary head start ahead of the FA starting today.
What is Aaron Rodgers saying?
Rodgers hasn’t given a clue about where his future lies. The closest anyone got to getting something out of him was former Gang Green wide receiver, Brandon Marshall. For an episode of his podcast, ‘I Am Athlete’, Marshall caught up with the Super Bowl XLV MVP at the RX Flag Football Charity Game in Laguna Beach. And despite remaining tight-lipped, Rodgers hinted at a Broadway-bound move.

“Well, I think it won’t be long. There’s a time limit for all this. It’s always interesting meeting important figures in the sport. That’s all I’m giving you. Stay tuned,” Rodgers said initially to Marshall’s investigations about his meeting with the Jets. However, on being asked about the possibility of becoming an all-time Jet, A-Rod said, “not if you play for one year, you can’t be an all-time Jet.”

Woody Johnson and Robert Saleh also roped in Rodgers’ favorite Packers wideout Allen Lazard. And with the Jets already restructuring multiple active players’ contracts to accommodate Rodgers’ cap hit, things look to be as good as done. If only A-Rod gave the thumbs up.
