Arizona Cardinals GM Steve Keim talked about rookie QB Kyler Murray, mentioning his future with the Cardinals. Keim had appeared on the Pat McAfee Show and spoke about the fiasco regarding Murray’s contract that transpired in the offseason.

Keim said that Murray was an integral cog in the Cardinals’ future plans and was confident that the QB’s contract extension would work out without a hitch this summer.

Why does Kyler Murray find himself without a contract?

GM Keim’s statements regarding Murray show that the Arizona Cardinals hold the QB in high regard. He said, “He is our future. We feel that way strongly, and I feel that we will be able to get something done this summer.”

This statement shows that the Cardinals intent on keeping Murray on their roster. In fact, Keim mentioned that the only reason the signing of the contract didn’t accomplish yet was because of timing. He said this was because the Scouting Combine, the NFL Draft, and the free agency were prioritized.

The Cardinals brought up Murray’s fifth-year clause in late April, ensuring the QBs stay on the team for the next two seasons.

Do the Cardinals really want to keep Murray?

Regarding the new contract for Murray, Keim said that they are in daily conversations with Murray’s agent, Erik Burkhardt. The latter also incidentally manages Kliff Kingsbury, the Cardinals’ head coach.

Both Keim and Kingsbury are optimistic about Murray’s return to the team, with Keims commenting that in the upcoming regular season, the QB would lead the Cardinals’ offense. Kingsbury also said that Murray would even participate in a compulsory minicamp.

Another reason showing the Cardinals’ plan to have Murray stay has been the trade of wide receiver Marquise ‘Hollywood” Brown to the Baltimore Ravens. The Cardinals traded their 2022 first-round pick for the WR, who is friends with Murray, for both having studied together at Oklahoma.

Keim mentioned Murray was “a football junkie… He’ll shoot me texts before the draft or we’ll talk about guys that he likes… I think he’s that kind of guy [someone who wants to build something special.”

Murray was the Cardinals’ first pick of the 2019 draft and signed a four-year contract. He effectively contributed to the team from the 2019 to 2021 seasons, leading the Cardinals to the playoffs in 2021.
