In 2017, the franchise kept a close eye on prospective QB options within the Draft. On top of their list was the Chiefs QB and current Browns QB Deshaun Watson to become the face of their franchise.
The team was the custodian of the No.13 pick in 2017 under former head coach Bruce Arians, and Mahomes was on their radar.
Unfortunately, the Cardinals would end up missing two of the future star QBs in the NFL with both the Chiefs and the Houston Texans trading up. Arians later reveals that Mahomes put on one of the best workouts of any prospect he has personally been in attendance. They would end up choosing LB Haason Reddick out of Temple and watch the Chiefs become Super Bowl champions with Mahomes in 2019.
The Arizona Cardinals might be lamenting missing out on Patrick Mahomes
During an interview with Arizona Sports 98.7 FM, Arians describes the time stating, “The draft is the draft. It’s kind of crazy when you’re sitting there and go, ‘hey, we’re getting one of these two guys’ and, boom, two teams trade in front of you.”
The franchise will go on to face their struggles with getting their starting QB until the 2019 NFL Draft acquisition of Kyler Murray.

While the team would later go on to hire Mahomes’ college head coach Kliff Kingsbury to be their head coach, Cardinals fans wonder about what could have been. Kingsbury was one of the few who predicted Mahomes to be one day the highest-paid player in the NFL.
He was in awe of a young Mahomes and his effortlessness in making difficult throws with the football.
This incident is a clear reminder for the NFL fans of how important the Draft can be for their respective franchises. The prospects can turn into the face of a franchise quite quickly and become one of the league’s top players.
