Brock Purdy will find himself quarterbacking the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday, adorning to his many titles. The journey towards it however demands thanks in part to the right push and recognition Iowa State coach, Matt Campbell lent the 24-year-old. Today, Purdy reveals that this long-standing relationship has grown to take on a form much closer to heart.

Brock Purdy has held an impressive presence throughout his time at Iowa State under Campbell’s guidance. It is through this journey and beyond that Campbell stuck along, that has Purdy calling him ‘another dad’.

Brock Purdy reflects on Campbell’s impact

With a couple of days left for the Super Bowl LVIII, Brock Purdy made an appearance for a media interview. Speaking of all things 49ers and quarterback, a question had Brock Purdy addressing his relationship with Matt Campbell. “I don’t know, he is like another dad to me, but also like one of my best friends. He’s been real with me just about everything in life,” the 24-year-old remarks. But unlike the popular narrative of diminishing bonds after graduation, Purdy and Campbell built on a rather sturdy one.

“Once I got the 9ers and graduated from Iowa State, I feel like we got even closer just in terms of talking about everything. He’s been such a role model for me in my life,” the quarterback reflects. For Brock Purdy, Campbell has been a guiding light and not just on the ground. His attitude toward one in terms of standing for the right or binding with the right people has placed an equal influence on Purdy’s path. However, the admiration has been rather mutual.

Through his years at Iowa State, Brock Purdy has contributed well and more to Matt Campbell’s coaching records. KCCI reports, that out of 53-48 figures for the coach, Purdy lent over half of them during four years at Iowa State.

Thus, when the quarterback was tagged a ‘game manager,’ Campbell knew he was far from it. “I’m probably not educated on what the national narrative of game manager actually means, but what I know of Brock Purdy, from the day I met him … is he’s a winner,” Campbell said.

He further went on to add how each game Brock Purdy has played has either resulted in him leading the win or providing an opportunity through his performance to work towards one. “But at the end of the day, he keeps winning,” were the coach’s words. Through highs and through lows, the 49ers quarterback has found reliance on his mentor.
