The long-overdue trade of Browns’ QB Baker Mayfield finally happened. Mayfield will join the Carolina Panthers this season and start as their quarterback. Due to their mandatory minicamp, the Panthers were showing signs of urgency to sign him. But it happened later than the front office would’ve anticipated. However, in 2018, the Panthers’ offensive coordinator was not so fond of their new QB.

Ben McAdoo, the offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers, made a few critical comments about Baker’s abilities as a QB. It is ironic since the team became eager to sign the 27-year-old shortly after the offer was available. The Browns wanted Mayfield to peacefully move on and decided it’s best if the QB joined another team.

Moreover, Carolina will ship a conditional fifth-round pick to the Browns. It can also turn into a fourth considering Mayfield’s playing time with the Panthers. Consequently, the no.1 draft pick agreed to cut $3.5 million off his salary to help the trade happen. Finalising his salary, the Browns will pay him $10.5 million while the Panthers are obligated to pay him around $5 million.

Even though the Panthers have got a star pick, it seems like its former coaching staff member is not a big fan of the QB. While McAdoo was taking time off from coaching in 2018, he still made assessments about the QB drafts that year. He did not speak well of Baker Mayfield.

What did Ben say about Baker Mayfield and his skills on the field?

The offensive coordinator felt that Mayfield has significant drawbacks. He criticised his height, athleticism, hand size, and the offense he played in at Oklahoma. He said, “I didn’t see a lot of pro-style football in his college tape. And if you’re short you have to be able to make up for it some way, somehow, and personality doesn’t do that. I didn’t think he was a great athlete.”

He added, “This guy is kinda like a pocket quarterback that is short and with small hands, that’s what I worry about.” What makes it interesting is that McAdoo is still the offensive coordinator of the Panthers and has to train Mayfield now.

The events that will transpire after this trade will be exciting to observe. Baker is looking to make a fresh start with the new team; after expressing how it disappointed him that the Browns’ signed Deshaun Watson. So this is a second chance for the QB to redeem himself with the Panthers.
