While the NFL off-season is barely underway, the future of San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback, Trey Lance seems uncertain. ESPN’s Booger McFarland sees a different future for the rookie.

Recently, on ESPN’s NFL Live, McFarland said, “Of all the rookie quarterbacks last year, I am the most concerned about Trey Lance, and that includes Justin Field. I just think, from an injury standpoint, he didn’t prove he can stay healthy. From a quarterback standpoint, I didn’t see enough to say.”

There is no denying McFarland’s concern
Lance entered the 2021 NFL season nursing a finger injury. Additionally, he sprained his knee during the first game he played. As such, it is clear why Booger claimed that Lance had not proven himself to him from a health standpoint.
Furthermore, Lance was reduced to a second-string quarterback to Jimmy Garoppolo in the Niners and did not get enough opportunities to play. The rookie, however, saw some significant playing time when Garoppolo was sidelined.
Nevertheless, he combined 603 passing yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions in six games. As a result, this was a very small sample size to evaluate him on a quarterback scale.
Is there a future for Trey Lance in the 49ers?
The San Francisco 49ers drafted Lance as a first-round, third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. However, drafting him was not an easy task, and the Niners had to pay a hefty price to acquire him.

In order to move up in the draft, the Niners traded their 2022 and 2023 first-round pick to Miami Dolphins. Moreover, they had to give up their third-round pick in the 2021 draft to get the third-overall pick in the 2021 draft. Therefore, the Niners now have no pick in either the first round or the third round of the 2022 NFL draft.

McFarland’s concern is reasonable, but it will be interesting to see what the 49ers decide. Will they give up on the rookie without examining his potential? Are they willing to trade Lance for whom they paid a huge price? We will have answers to all our questions once the off-season gets fully underway.
