Tom Brady’s former NFL coach has some experience with coaching exceptional talent. And he had some words for Aaron Rodgers’ future coach before his trip to New York was fully confirmed. Having coached Brady for three seasons and having spent four years as the Jets’ head coach Todd Bowles is a good authority to give advice to the franchise on how to assimilate their new star QB into the roster.

Before the Rodgers-Jets saga came to its conclusion, everyone was finely tuned into the drama. Including Bowles. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach talked about the initial days of Brady joining the team and had a lot of insights that can come in handy for the New York Jets as they welcome Rodgers to the gang.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers learned from Tom Brady’s input and suggestions when he joined the team, Brady’s last coach Todd Bowles shared. Also, they do listen to Brady’s ideas about skill positions, but ultimately, the decisions were made by the coach and general manager, not just the star quarterback. Talking about getting an experienced QB, Bowles said, “I think they’re two different ways of teaching that. You’re still trying to find out about a young guy. An old guy, you know what he can do. It’s just a matter of collaborating and doing the things you want to do along with the things he wants to do.

“For us, it was a process,” Bowles said. “When Tom came in, It’s a lot of give and take there. You want to run your system but you want to help him be successful, so you want to bring some things to the table that he does well also.”

Further Bowles explains, when it comes to experience, there is a difference between working with Tom Brady, an established quarterback, and a young quarterback. With Brady, he has a wealth of experience and is very familiar with the system, almost like he can do it with his eyes closed. Brady also has a strong work ethic.

“From an experience standpoint, it’s different,” Bowles mentioned. “You have an established guy who can run it with his eyes closed and the work ethic is there.”

At the NFL meetings last month, Bowles advised that teams should be run the way their coach and general manager want, not solely to benefit one quarterback. They can bring in players to complement a quarterback’s style, but the coach and GM should ultimately decide how the team should be run.

“You run the team how you run the team,” Bowles said at the meetings last month.

Bowles and Brady worked together to create a plan that made the most of Brady’s abilities and suited his comfort level, while also staying true to their system. They helped Brady succeed while maintaining their own system, and it paid off with a Super Bowl victory. Could the Jets benefit from the same fate under their new QB? Meanwhile, Rodgers has already begun his initiation into the New York circle.
