“Cause I bet I’ll have you naked by the end of this song,” the lyrics of the song. Simultaneously, he grabbed Jackson’s outfit and ripped it exposing her body, and sparking several controversies. It was meant to be a surprise with Jackson revealing another costume, but the plan miserably failed.

Broadcast partners like MTV and CBS were not aware of these rehearsals and hence outraged after the incident. “The decision to have a costume reveal at the end of my halftime show performance was made after final rehearsals. MTV was completely unaware of it,” Jackson said in a statement. “It was not my intention that it go as far as it did. I apologize to anyone offended — including the audience, MTV, CBS, and the NFL,” she added.

Janet Jackson had to face the repercussions
The aftermath of this incident certainly proved terrible for the American superstar who got disinvited from the Grammy’s that year. However, Timberlake was still allowed to attend the show and received the award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
On behalf of Jackson and himself, Timberlake used the platform to apologize publicly and claimed that it was unintentional. Per reports, Les Moonves, then CEO of CBS, asked other radio stations and channels to stop playing Jackson’s compositions.

“Moonves ordered Viacom properties VH1 and MTV, and all Viacom-owned radio stations, to stop playing Jackson’s songs and music videos,” said an outlet. In the two-part documentary that got released portraying the life of Jackson, she narrated the entire story and her life now, where she is being constantly targeted by the people. However, she also mentioned that despite so many backlashes, she and Timberlake are on the same page and have moved on.
