NFL legend Travis Kelce has been on the news radar since his dating rumors with Taylor Swift began. But at the same time, the Kansas City Chiefs‘ tight end is reaching new destinations in his game as well. The defending champions were desperate for a redemption against the Jacksonville Jaguars after an opening defeat to the Detroit Lions. Coming off a fresh injury, Travis reminded what the Chiefs were missing against the Lions. He put up an eventful display for good, giving Patrick Mahomes a memorable birthday gift. In addition to the win, Travis used the occasion to add a feather in his cap after overtaking Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe.

Travis’s current contract with the Chiefs runs out in 2025. Last season, The Chiefs faced a salary capital shortage and had to restructure the contract. But he seemingly had no problem with it. Travis has always held a unique perspective on the relationship between earnings and achievements. And he had urged Chris Jones to end his holdout and return to the team before things eventually settled down.

Two days before the Chiefs’ first game of the season, Travis suffered a hyperextended knee in the training session. Although he showed up to the training the following day, being unable to continue ruled him out for the Lions game. And the Chiefs clearly had its effects on them as the Lions topped the defending champions in a close battle.

Luckily for the Chiefs and Travis himself, the injury wasn’t a serious one and took no more than a few days to heal. Jumping straight back into action against the Jaguars, Travis has made his mark on the win and on the record books. He received a total of 4 catches for 26 yards and additionally scored a touchdown from a Mahomes pass. And that put him in the fourth place (818) of total career receptions among tight ends in NFL history, overtaking Broncos legend Shannon Sharpe (815). The Chiefs have shared an Instagram post following the win, congratulating Travis on the feat.

Travis has been an integral part of the Chiefs since he was first drafted by the franchise back in 2013. He has been part of two Superbowl winning Chief’s team. Travis signed his first contract extension with the Chiefs in 2016 and then again in 2020. Last year, the Chiefs had to restructure Travis’s contract and he was more than agree with it. Given in his own words, he had always prioritized victory over financial gains. Following the restructure, the Chiefs were able to clean up $3.455 million in cap space.

Sadly, same was not the case with Chris Jones situation which caused a lot of damage to the Chiefs. Both parties failed to come to a mutual agreement over a contract extension and Jones refused to take the field. He remained in the dugout throughout the offseason, till first week into the season.

Travis Kelce and Chris Jones: Chiefs’ two missing pieces

Seeing the outcome of the first game, the Chiefs took no time to initiate damage control with their most valuable defensive asset. Jones signed a one-year extension with the Chiefs on 11 September, three days following the defeat. After getting both of the pillars back from last season’s Superbowl winning team, Chiefs could prove to be too deadly to handle for anyone right now. And the results speak for themselves as the hopeless Jaguars offense could not do anything other than running around against Chiefs’ defense line.

Despite making a slow start to the season, the Chiefs have settled things right back just in time. Chiefs getting their full team back on field and regaining past season’s tempo is really bad news for the challengers.
