Home/NFL

Coming up in the Deion Sanders household is no walk in the park. Commitment, discipline, and dedication reign supreme in Prime Time’s immediate surroundings. At times, the legendary NFL cornerback may take it a notch too far, like his pro-spanking stance. However, for the most part, fans and other sporting legends seem to agree with his parenting methods. And it’s not just the sports community. Coach Prime also shares this trait with an icon of the Hip-Hop and Rap industry.

The Colorado Buffaloes’ head coach recently amplified a message on fatherhood. And it was from someone who went through similar experiences during their childhood. Yes, there is a lot in common between Deion Sanders and the legendary Lil Wayne. So what was the $170 million-worth rapper’s message?

The former Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers cornerback didn’t exactly have the most ideal upbringing. After his parents divorced when he was young, Deion Sanders came up with the support of a single mother. Connie Knight was all Sanders needed to fulfil his ambitions. However, that doesn’t discount the true importance of having a father figure in your life. And Lil Wayne understands this all too well.

Wayne, who also witnessed his parents separating when he was 2 years old, knows how important fatherhood is. Speaking about the subject, Wayne, a father of four, said, “Important isn’t even the word. It’s life. I didn’t have a father. It’s not easy to do something you didn’t have done for you. But their love cancels all the challenges out.” Sanders proudly shared the message on his Instagram story.

Prime Time has done a pretty stellar job as a father too and this Lil Wayne quote resonated with the 2x Super Bowl champion.

Sanders is a father of five. Shilo and Shedeur have followed their father’s footsteps into the footballing universe, while his youngest Shelomi excels in basketball. His eldest Deiondra Sanders works in sports management, while Deion Sanders Jr. is an entrepreneur and musician with his own fashion line. Safe to say, Prime Time has outdone his own expectations. However, the success comes at the cost of discipline.

Weeks before sharing Lil Wayne’s message on fatherhood, Deion Sanders shared a more controversial opinion on his Instagram account. Taking a pro stance for disciplining kids at home, Sanders quoted a picture that said, “My parents spanked me as a child. As a result, I now suffer from a psychological condition known as ‘respect for others’.” This pro-spanking stance received significant backlash. However, that’s not the first time Deion has set some strict rules. It’s just as stringent when it comes to recruiting players on his team.

In a video from the Rich Eisen Show, Deion Sanders claimed that he liked his offensive players to come from a dual-parent household with a GPA above 3.5. However, when it comes to the defense, he preferred players with “single mommas” and someone who is “trying to get it, and on a free lunch.” Needless to say, there were a few who objected to this thinking, including former NFL DE Marcus Spears.
