The scenes in college football over the past few weeks have been like a roller coaster ride with a broken track. And to anyone’s surprise, who do we find at the center? It’s none other than the Colorado godfather, Deion Sanders. Since July 27, a total of 6 schools from Pac-12 have announced their departure from the conference, leaving only 4 current members in the conference. So, it’s no surprise how this descended into chaos.

Coach Prime, who took over Colorado a few months ago, is now surrounded by numerous speculations, as the team made the choice to move to the Big 12, with USC and UCLA already moving to the Big 10. Recently, he appeared in a press conference where he didn’t hold back, calling out everyone for their hypocrisy regarding this conference realignment.

During a recent press conference amid Colorado football’s fall camp, a reporter asked Coach Prime about his team’s direction amidst the chaos of conference realignment and how he felt about other teams moving to different conferences. With evident agitation, Sanders replied, “Man I don’t care nobody with different teams moving up,” followed by, “We’re trying to win man. I don’t care who we play.

The conversation then shifted to the money issue raised by the reporter, and Sanders emphasized that it has always been about money, calling out other schools for their hypocrisy in expressing concern over athletes pursuing lucrative deals and a better roster, while they themselves are chasing money for their own gain. Sanders’ candid remarks have been well-received by fans and foes alike, generating buzz on social media and news headlines.

Prime will lead his team in a highly anticipated game against TCU on Sept 2. Interestingly, TCU is also moving to the Big 12, making this showdown the kickoff of Colorado’s final days in the Pac-12 conference.

Will the Pac-12 collapse?

The uncertain future of the Pac-12 is evident due to its underwhelming handling of media rights and the departure of most teams, which hints at a possible collapse. With no media rights deal secured beyond the upcoming 2023-2024 season, these changes were no surprise to fans.

When the Commissioner of the Big-12, Brett Yormark said last year, “Big-12 is open for business,” he meant every word of it. Oregon and Washington were the first to join the Big 10, securing a massive $30 million in their first year. Moreover, the Big 12 also sealed a significant media deal that runs through 2031, providing assurance for the departing teams.

As Sanders leads Colorado back to the Big 12, a conference the team helped build in the 90s, it’s worth noting that they’ve made a similar move before. When the Big 12 was on the verge of collapse, Colorado switched to the Pac-12, and now, a decade later, history repeats itself. Nonetheless, the future of the remaining four teams in the Pac-12 remains intriguing to watch.
