The Denver Broncos kicked off the season that mirrored an underwhelming season opener from the previous year against the Seahawks. In Week 1 Broncos suffered a narrow loss at the hands of the Las Vegas Raiders, by a score of 17-16. Despite a favorable setup, the debut of the Sean Payton era was anything but impressive.

In the maiden year of Payton, the Broncos’ defense has considerably improved and QB Russell Wilson has showcased efficient passing. But the Payton impact did not live up to the expectations, and it’s evident that there is still room for refinement. As the Broncos gear up for Week 2, Payton has specific goals in his mind.

What does Payton aim for in the upcoming match?

Following the disappointing season opener, Payton had acknowledged that the victory was hard to come by given the team toiled under ‘unusual circumstances’, particularly the fact that both teams had only six possessions. He reiterated that the victory was a result of multiple factors in his recent press conference.

“When you hear that term, ‘go make a play,’ though there’s more to that. I mean, go make a play. Alright, how, what’s the play? So there’s a combination of a number of things.” said Payton.

As the team prepares for the second match against the Washington Commanders, Payton’s sole focus is on improving performance. “Look, like I said, there were things I liked about what we did, and now we get back to work this week. We’re up against a different defense, a different structure. The same goes for them, so we prepare for this game.”.He added.

The season opener loss might not be a bad luck charm

The Broncos will face the Washington Commanders led by Ron Rivera, on Sunday and it might be too early to declare it a crucial match for the High Mile City. Especially given Coach Payton’s prior stints the season opener might not be a bad luck charm. During his tenure at the Saints, the team beat the odds to end the regular season with an impressive 13-3 record and made it to the playoffs. Fast forward to the 2017 season, they secured an 11-5 record and tasted a playoff win despite kicking off 0-2.

“I do think regardless of winning or losing your first game, around our league, there’s a sprint to improve. And usually, you can see that in the first month”. Payton said in a recent interview.

“So there is a sense of urgency that quickly digests in the game, making the corrections, then coming out here and practicing and improving as a team. That has to happen. So I think the combination of putting it behind you and improving and doing that with a good team”.He added.
