The off-season quarterback dominoes keep falling as another major release report rocks the NFL world. Matt Ryan has come to the end of his very short stay in Indianapolis. And the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback is the latest addition to an already nail-biting free agency.

According to reports from NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the Colts have informed their quarterback Matt Ryan that they will be cutting him ahead of the 2023 season, and continue their search for a new quarterback.

The 2016 NFL MVP is not a part of the future plans for the Indianapolis Colts after arriving to reverse the franchise’s fortunes in March 2022. Things didn’t work out as the Colts went on a 4-12-1 losing run, with Matt Ryan being benched twice during the season, by Sam Ehlinger and Nick Foles.

The quarterback would have triggered a $10 million roster bonus on March 17. And the Colts can breathe a sigh of relief as far as cap space is concerned, after freeing up around $17 million with the Ryan release. However, thanks to Ryan’s agent and the restructuring of his contract last year, the Colts will still have to pay the $12 million guaranteed portion of his 2023 salary.

Also, at 37, it won’t be difficult for Ryan’s agent to find a starting place in a quarterback-needy league.

But Matt needs to stop the comeback wins against him

Yes, there are a few dynamic prospects in the NFL draft this year. And the current free-agent quarterbacks in the market don’t make it easier either. However, Ryan’s consistency and durability make up for a lot of it, being only one of two players in NFL history to have ten consecutive 4000 yards passing seasons and having missed only three games with injury in his entire career. However, he allows big comebacks and no team would like that.

This season he allowed the NFL’s biggest comeback when Kirk Cousins led the Minnesota Vikings to a 33-point comeback after the Colts were up 33-0 initially. Matt Ryan could not drive the offense to any additional scores as Indianapolis lost 36-39 in the end.

This could have only brought back painful memories for Ryan, who lost the infamous 28-3 lead to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots back in Super Bowl LI, losing 34-28 in overtime. That is also the largest comeback in Super Bowl history. And if the ex-Falcon can master the art of holding leads, we can surely expect some good news for him shortly.
