The Cowboys are currently going through a lot of overhauls, as they recently released their legacy running back Ezekiel Elliott. Notably, the RB played seven seasons for the Dallas franchise, after getting picked by the franchise back in 2016. In the same year, the Cowboys also picked their star quarterback Dak Prescott, who will be playing his eighth season with the Dallas team in 2023. Certainly, there’s a question mark over Prescott’s future as well after seeing Elliott’s fortunes. It seems like the Cowboys are already planning for the future, post-Prescott era.

It is worth mentioning that Prescott had a mixed season last year. Despite his great performance in the Wild Card Round against Tom Brady and the Bucs, he failed to produce against the 49ers in the Divisional Round. Now, the Cowboys are currently scouting a future prospect, as they recently had a private training session.

As per NFL Insider, Tom Pelissero, the Cowboys had a private workout session with the Purdue Boilermakers’ quarterback, Aidan O’Connell. The 24-year-old QB also has a private workout planned with the Jets, Raiders, Bengals, Colts, Bears, and 10 other teams in the NFL. Safe to say, the scouts really found something in the Purdue QB, as he has busy plans scheduled next month.

Although the Cowboys have not signed the QB, a private training session with him certainly raises a lot of questions regarding the future of Prescott. Earlier, Jerry Jones’ son and executive vice-president of the Cowboys, Stephen Jones, expressed his desire to get Prescott a contract extension.

Currently, Prescott is getting almost $40 million APY. However, a contract extension will see him getting almost $50 million APY till 2029. It is worth noting that Chiefs‘ QB Patrick Mahomes currently has the biggest contract in NFL history, as he will earn around $503 million in 12 years. If Prescott signs a new deal, he will become the highest-paid QB in the NFL in terms of APY.

In the same interview, Prescott also expressed his desire to play for the Cowboys for a long time as well. To be more precise, he doesn’t want to play for another franchise. Despite his comments, RB Elliott’s sudden departure and O’Connell’s private training may cause some serious doubts in his mind.
