This past Sunday marked the first-ever NFL regular season game in Germany. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers took to the field to play the Seattle Seahawks. While Tom Brady and the Bucs created history by winning the first-ever match in the country. The reception received by the german fans was no less than spectacular. And as the country emerges as one of the biggest markets for the sport in European countries, League commissioner, Roger Goodell, had some exciting plans moving forward.

On November 13, 2022, the NFL had one of its biggest days of the season. The league extended its operation to another country. The Bucs and the Hawks played the first league game in Germany at Allianz Arena. Around 69,811 people showed up to spectate the game from the stands. This was a hugely positive day for the sport. The game was further endorsed by the presence of German international soccer stars. Most notably, the Bayern Munich forward Serge Gnabry. According to the league, Gnabry is one of the 17 million casual fans in the country, making them the largest European market for the sport.

Roger Goodell on further NFL plans

League commissioner Roger Goodell has exciting news for the german fans. Speaking at a fan forum in Munich, he said that there will at least be 4 more matches in 4 more years. This is thrilling news, for both the viewers from the country and for the sport. While the league is the richest sporting guild in the world, it is not as popular as soccer in many countries outside the USA. To tackle this malady, Goodell and other officials have launched a concerted effort to boost the international popularity of the sport.

In 2021, the league announced that they have granted 18 teams access to 26 international Home Marketing Areas. Giving them special fan engagement and commercialization abilities. The initiative also outlines that all 32 teams should at least play one league game outside of the country in the next 8 seasons.

Earlier this season, Tottenham Hotspur also helped the league to host 2 games at their stadium. The first game had an attendance of 60,639 in which the Vikings played the Saints. And then in the next game, the Packers played the Giants. It had 61,024 present for the game. And now with the success in Germany, it seems that the league would be happy for its efforts.
