The entire football world received some shocking news last night. Legendary FBS head coach Mike Leach passed away at the age of 61 and the College Football community cannot come around the sudden demise of the legend. And it’s not just the NCAA that is shocked. Former college rival and Packers QB Aaron Rodgers expressed his condolences.
Rodgers came to the Pat McAfee show yesterday to discuss the Packers’ win over the Bears last week and a little update on the bye week. However, when host and former Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee brought up the subject of Leach, A-Rod only had high words of praise for the offensive mastermind. Mississippi State HC Mike Leach has some complications with his heart on Sunday after attending a Christmas party on Saturday. Leach was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Centre in Jackson, Mississippi, where he passed away.
Aaron Rodgers faced Mike Leach’s no.1 ranked Texas Tech team back in 2004 and no.12 still remembers the prolific Bowl game. “I just remember marveling at the offensive line splits and then the tempo and the passing. The vertical passing. The short passing game. They could run against any different coverage,” the reigning back-to-back NFL MVP said.
Aaron Rodgers brought up Leach’s iconic Air Raid play
Mike Leach led his Mississippi State team to an Egg Bowl victory over rivals, the Ole Miss University of Mississippi in his last game. Veteran Leach was in his third season with the Bulldogs and was preparing to face Illinois in the Relia Quest Bowl. 61-year-old Mike holds an impressive record of 158-107 in his 21 seasons as a head coach with three different schools. Leach also took his teams to 19 bowl games during these 21 years.
Mike Leach became the most winning coach in college football history during his time in Texas. However, Aaron Rodgers thinks his air raid offense is still the highlight of his offensive legacy. “You’d watch him on the sidelines. His air raid attack. He had a little you know 4 by 6 little index card that he was calling plays on sometimes. I think he just knew the system so well,” 2010 Super Bowl MVP Rodgers said.
