Tom Brady’s performance is nothing short of a disaster this season. Whether his dip in performance is because of his ongoing personal troubles is another story, but the fact remains the same. The Buccaneers are now 3-5, and Brady’s possible last season in the NFL might just become one to forget. Just before their loss against the Baltimore Ravens. However, Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe had a bone to pick with Brady’s QB ranking.

Before the game against the Ravens, Brady was ranked #6 (now #18) on the list of best-performing quarterbacks this season. Sharpe’s words are quick and sharp about Brady’s QBR. “That’s a joke,” he said to Skip Bayless, his co-host.

“I don’t think anybody I know, even Tom Brady’s biggest fans, even his staunchest defenders, doesn’t think Tom Brady’s played the sixth best quarterback this season. Tom Brady has eight passing touchdowns this season, that’s 16th in the NFL. He has the third most passing attempts, so he’s thrown the ball to third most times.”
“But he has the 16th most passing attempt. Five of the eight touchdowns came when Tom Brady did not have the lead, only two touchdowns have come when Tom Brady has had the lead. One touchdown came when he’s tied. He’s 25th in yards per attempt. He’s 26th in third down conversion rate. Tied for 27th in the touchdown percentage in the red zone. And somehow Tom Brady is playing the sixth best quarterback in the NFL. Nah, that doesn’t jive with me.”

Shannon Sharpe deems Tom Brady “undeserving” of his QBR rating
Sharpe’s comments drew a sharp but sensible rebuttal from Bayless. Bayless goes on to point out that the Buccaneers‘ offense is one of the worst in the league. And that they lack serious weapons in their wide receiver corps. Scottie Miller can only run go routes, and the opposition defense now knows to keep Brady‘s go-to man, Mike Evans, covered. Bayless believes that the difficult circumstances under which he plays have effectively led people to underestimate how well he’s playing.
The loss against the Baltimore Ravens, and against the Carolina Panthers, have dealt serious blows to the Bucs’ morale. With his personal life tumbling into an abyss, it is unpredictable if Brady can get back to last year’s form. Or did Brady set the bar too high for himself? Is there even a minuscule chance for the Bucs to pull back?
