Transgender rights have rightfully taken a front seat in the NFL and beyond. American schools have started to take the LGBTQ rights of their students seriously. But not everyone is on board with this in the public. A 67-year-old NFL legend is at risk of losing the analyst job after posting an insensitive tweet on the issue.

Tony Dungy has always been a vocal critic when it comes to LGBTQ rights. And he continued the trend with his latest comments, which landed him in big trouble.

Former Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy landed in hot water for his latest comments on transgender norms in school. His tweet was in reply to the Minnesota House Representatives discussing keeping menstrual products in men’s restrooms for transgender men.

“That’s nothing. Some school districts are putting litter boxes in the school bathrooms for the students who identify as cats. Very important to address every student’s needs,” Dungy replied. Dungy has always maintained that being from the LGBTQ community is a lifestyle choice. And his latest tweet is also an expression of the same belief.

Dungy faced backlash for his insensitive comments. And a few hours after tweeting it out, the former Pittsburgh Steelers safety deleted the said tweet, as per SI.com. But the damage was already done. Dungy might end up losing his analyst job with NBC for the NFL postseason. And this isn’t the first time that the legendary head coach has said something controversial on the issue.

The past comments by the NFL legend

Tony Dungy has supported the anti-LGBTQ rhetoric in the past. And he roots his beliefs in the Christian tradition and has supported organizations fighting against same-sex marriage rights. And he opposed taking openly gay athletes on his team.

When the then-St. Louis Rams drafted openly gay defensive lineman Michael Sam in the 2014 draft, Dungy said he wouldn’t do that.

“I wouldn’t have taken him. I wouldn’t want to deal with all of it. It’s not going to be totally smooth … things will happen,” he said.

Beliefs notwithstanding, Dungy is a legend of the NFL. He won the Super Bowl both as a player and as a head coach. And he made a team out of the then-struggling Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He has had only one losing season in his entire NFL coaching career, the first year in Tampa. So, there is no denying that he has made a name for himself on the field. Maybe a little sensitivity off it would go a long way for him.
