Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost on Sunday to one of the toughest defenses in the league. No, make that the best defense in the league. However, the San Francisco 49ers’ defense wasn’t the biggest surprise in their 35-7 victory. It was rookie third-choice quarterback Brock Purdy who stirred up quite a few emotions in his first start in the NFL.
Purdy was the last pick in the 2022 NFL draft. And nobody expected him to step up to the plate in his rookie year. However, when QBs Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance were sidelined due to injuries, Brock Purdy pulled off a young Brady-ish backup role. The 22-year-old out of Iowa State had two passing touchdowns and ran for an additional six points score. And one of these touchdowns had Purdy’s father in tears.
After the 49ers QB ran in for a touchdown, the Niners were up 14-0. Brock Purdy then connected with San Francisco 49ers tight end cum wide receiver cum running back, Christian McCaffrey, on a 27-yard passing TD. The beautiful back-shoulder pass was the tipping point and Purdy Sr. couldn’t hold back the tears of joy anymore.
Brock Purdy is having a career trajectory very similar to Tom Brady’s
The San Francisco 49ers were mentally down after losing QB Jimmy Garoppolo in the game against the Miami Dolphins due to a broken foot injury. However, Purdy stepped up to the occasion. He passed over 217 yards with 2 touchdowns in the 33-17 win over a formidable Miami side. And it wasn’t a one-hit wonder. Brock Purdy had the mammoth responsibility of carrying on the run in his first career start against seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady.
And Tom Brady has some experience in this ‘backup QB coming to the rescue’ situation. 21 years ago, the 199th 6th round pick in the 2000 NFL draft found himself in a similar situation. The New England Patriots QB Drew Bledsoe couldn’t carry on after a tackle from New York Jets’ Mo Lewis. Brady came on and the rest is history. For Brock Purdy to put on 3 combined touchdowns against the man who wrote this script 21 years ago was a gigantic task. And Purdy came out on top.

Purdy will probably get his second start next week with the run he has enjoyed in the past 2 regular season games. The San Francisco 49ers face divisional rivals Seattle Seahawks next week.
