Aaron Rodgers has been in all of the headlines in the last week or so. Such is the stature of Rodgers. Despite it being the weekend of the NFL Draft, the biggest story in the league was Aaron Rodgers wanting to leave the Packers.

The reigning MVP reportedly no longer wants to continue with the franchise. Obviously, news of his desire to leave reached everyone fast, including the San Francisco 49ers, who actually inquired about getting him on board.

San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to Rich Eisen recently. He revealed that he did make a phone call to inquire about Aaron Rodgers and the possibility of the trade.

Rodgers is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, and Shanahan felt he had to at least ask without letting that opportunity slip. So he made a phone call to Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur, who told him that there was no use calling the front office.

“The exact truth is, I don’t want to wake up the next day on Friday and see Aaron Rodgers, one of the best quarterbacks in this league traded without doing any due diligence on it.

“I just called Matt and asked if there is anything to it. Matt (LaFleur) told me I’d be wasting my time if we had (John) Lynch call. So Lynch did not call anyone the next day.”

49ers asked about Aaron Rodgers

Shanahan noted that he told LaFleur that he was only asking because it was his responsibility to do so. A player like Aaron Rodgers only becomes available in the trade market very rarely. So Shanahan had no choice but to call.

However, the 49ers didn’t end up calling Brian Gutekunst. Shanahan added that the 49ers were still happy at the end of the day, using their 3rd overall pick to draft Trey Lance.

“But yes, I did reach out to Matt the night before and asked him ‘hey man, I don’t want to wake up the next day and see that Aaron was traded for something and I didn’t even look into it’.

“So that’s what I did with Matt and he gave me a very quick answer so I didn’t even tell John to call (Brian) Gutekunst. It all worked out I guess, we were happy to get our guy and hopefully it will work out for them.”
