The 2020 NFL season ended on a low note for Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers. Their season was marred with injuries to key players such as George Kittle, Nick Bosa, Raheem Mostert, and star quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. They traded up with Miami Dolphins to acquire the third overall pick at the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft with one thing on their mind – Justin Fields.

The Ohio State quarterback impressed in his final NCAA season with the Buckeyes. He threw for 2,100 yards with 22 passing TDs against 6 interceptions. He further rushed for 383 with 5 rushing TDs as his team made the CFP National Championship final. Although they suffered a 52-24 defeat to the Alabama Crimson Tide Football team, Fields did enough to prove that he is a first-round-worthy draft pick.

Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch attend Justin Fields’ Pro Day

Coach Kyle Shanahan and San Francisco 49ers GM John Lynch took a major gamble by trading up ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft. They’ve essentially risked their future by giving up three first-round picks and one third-round pick to the Miami Dolphins. They remain unconvinced by Jimmy G, especially after his recent injury struggles.

But considering the below video, we reckon their ‘calculated risk’ might just bear fruit in the long term.

Justin Fields put on a stellar display during his second Pro Day workout on Wednesday. The private event was attended by both, Shanahan and Lynch. Atlanta Falcons (who own the 4th overall pick at the 2021 NFL Draft) also sent their scouting team to watch Fields make some scintillating throws in Columbus.

Trevor Lawrence is expected to join Urban Meyer’s Jacksonville Jaguars as the 1st overall pick this summer. Meanwhile, BYU Cougars quarterback Zach Wilson is reportedly Robert Saleh’s preferred choice at number 2. That leaves the NFL teams with the likes of Fields, Trey Lance (NDSU), Mac Jones (Alabama), and Kyle Trask (Florida Gators), as the other top quarterback prospects.

During his two-year stint with Ohio State, Fields threw for 5,300+ yards with 60+ passing TDs. He will definitely add some flair to a 49ers team that needs an injection of fresh young talent.
