In a report from Sun Sentinel’s Dave Hyde, Payton was offered a 5-year, $100 million deal by the Dolphins for the vacant hot seat. It was a unique offer from the AFC East franchise and would have made Payton only the second NFL head coach to reach the $100 million mark.

The deal might have meant Payton becoming the highest-paid NFL head coach in 2022. It meant he would be surpassing New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick in the rankings. According to Hyde’s report, it was part of the Dolphins’ attempts to recruit both Payton and Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady. It was going to be an exciting time for the Dolphins fans, who were the ultimate sufferers from the collapse of the deal.

Despite the offer and speculative connections between Payton and the Dolphins franchise, the former has already denied them. According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, they were looking forward to talking with Payton after his retirement. However, the Saints reportedly weren’t willing to allow any communication between them.
