Serena Williams' 1999 US Open win—does it still give you chills?

From one legend to the other, Coach Prime is paving the way and giving flowers to none other than Serena Williams, one of the greatest sportswomen to ever exist. While Deion often chooses to talk about sporting GOATs himself frequently, this time, he let Williams’ own words do the talking as she described a pivotal moment in her career.

Serena Williams, the 23 Grand Slam title winner, is a beacon of inspiration not just to women, but an entire generation of athletes all over the world. She was ranked world No. 1 in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) for a staggering total of 319 weeks and to this day, is the only player to accomplish a Career Golden Slam in both the categories of singles and doubles. Williams retired 2 years ago and now shares stories from her sporting career that end up motivating the audience and in a similar narrative, her words won over Deion Sanders as well.

Take it from Deion to share Serena Williams’ iconic moment from the 1999 USO final. Coach Prime was so amazed with the pre-match tactic that Serena unwittingly implied that he had to come on to Instagram and share the video on his Instagram account on 12th July. The video saw the tennis legend recall her experience of facing off against Martina Hingis where her 5-word question was enough to rattle the former Swiss champion.

In the video, Serena explained how during the coin toss, she lost to Hingis and as she chose to receive first, Williams asked her, “Are you sure about that?” Supposedly, this cost Hingis the game as Serena did a clean sweep with 3 straight games, and clearly, Deion was greatly impressed with her here. Deion reposted this fantastic video and blessed the fans with a historic moment emphasizing pre-game jitters and how important they can be to the result. While Williams can be a bit intimidating sometimes in the spirit of competitiveness as was seen here, she definitely did not hold back on firing at Harrison Butker during the ESPY Awards for his insensitive comments from a while back.

Have an interesting take?

Back in May, the Kansas City Chiefs‘ Harrison Butker drew a whole lot of fire to himself when he made outrageous claims about women’s sports and how their responsibilities are solely limited to being a wife or a mother. While these comments of his were outrightly misogynistic, Butker didn’t really face a lot of consequences for his actions until last night when the Williams sisters as well as Quinta Brunson hit the stage.

During a dialogue between the trio, Venus was heard encouraging the audience to “go ahead and enjoy women’s sports like you would any other sports, because they are sports.” To which Serena added her fiery touch and said, “Except you, Harrison Butker. We don’t need you.” What’s interesting to note is that Butker was present in the audience but the camera didn’t pan to him for his reaction. There you have it. Whether it be facing a fast-paced ball or a misogynistic man in front of Serena, she sure knows how to hit it right back with more force and accuracy than ever.
