In the recent discourse surrounding Deion Sanders and Sports Illustrated (SI), the venerable publication finds itself under scrutiny for purportedly employing artificial intelligence to generate articles under pseudonymous bylines. Adding fuel to this controversy, SI has bestowed upon Deion Sanders the prestigious title of Sportsman of the Year, an accolade that has ignited a maelstrom of critique.

Traditionally reserved for the athlete or team that epitomizes the ethos of sportsmanship and unparalleled achievement throughout the year, the Sportsman of the Year award has become a focal point for discussions questioning whether Sanders’ performance truly aligns with these lofty ideals, especially when juxtaposed against other luminaries in the realm of sports. While many have detested the declaration, impactful individuals like Michael Irvin, the legendary Dallas Cowboys player and NFL Hall of Famer have sided with Sanders.

Detractors vehemently oppose awarding the Sportsman of the Year to someone leading the nation’s worst defensive team and residing at the Pac-12’s bottom. They argue that this prestigious honor, previously granted to legends like Muhammad Ali and Billie Jean King, should be reserved for unparalleled sporting champions. However, Michael Irvin on the latest episode of UNDISPUTED addressed this situation by supporting Deion Sanders. This is a crowning award for him,” said Irvin before drawing attention to the fact that coaching the younger generation is something Prime Time is truly passionate about and that he finds his ‘calling’ through coaching. “What transpired this season was not a success on the football field,” but what Sanders was able to do was nothing less than a miracle. He was able to “bring people together,” sell out every home game, and “unionize people,” in a way that was never done in the world of college football.

In contrast to all the criticism, supporters highlight Sanders’ transformative influence on the Colorado football program and the economic upswing in Boulder due to his coaching charisma and early-season success. Sanders was able to utilize “sports to make this a better place” which is big enough and makes him absolutely worthy of being named the 2023 Sportsperson of the Year. He inspired a lot of us,” concluded  Irvin, “this is a fitting award.”

With a touch of levity, however, critics have facetiously conjectured that the decision to honor Sanders may have been orchestrated by artificial intelligence, casting doubt on the contemporaneous relevance of the recognition. This skepticism is not unfounded, given the recent struggles of Sanders’ Colorado Buffaloes, boasting a lackluster 4-8 record and enduring a disheartening six-game losing streak since October 10th. The ongoing dialogue serves as an exploration of the intricate interplay between technology, sports journalism, and the inherently subjective nature of awards within the ever-evolving landscape of the sporting realm.
