The Denver Broncos are struggling this season, with a record of 1-5 after losing 19-8 to the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday. In light of this defeat, some comments made by head coach Sean Payton about USC quarterback Caleb Williams, who is projected to be the No. 1 draft pick, have resurfaced.

Pro Football Focus’ Sam Monson recently shared a video of Payton on “The Herd” with Colin Cowherd from November 2022. Payton described Williams as a “truly generational player” whom teams would be willing to tank for. Payton also suggested that the NFL adopt a lottery system for its annual draft similar to the NBA and NHL.

Payton also said the NFL may implement a lottery system in the future. This would be in response to players potentially losing games intentionally to improve their draft position, especially as the season progresses. He mentioned that this hasn’t been a problem in the league.

The Broncos lost on Thursday, leaving only the Carolina Panthers with a worse record than theirs at 0-5. After six games, Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson has completed 65.9% of his passes for 1,305 yards, with 12 touchdowns and four interceptions. Although his touchdown numbers are higher in 2023, the team is still struggling offensively, averaging only 21.5 points per game.

Williams is a highly touted prospect who has the potential to turn a franchise’s fortunes around. If the Denver team continues to struggle and ends up with the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, it’s possible that he might be an attractive candidate for the team to consider.

Patrick Mahomes, the star quarterback and leader of the Chiefs, achieved several accolades in his career. He earned an MVP award in his first season as a starter in 2018, followed by a Super Bowl MVP in 2019. In 2022, he won both awards in the same season. Mahomes has redefined the traditional quarterback role with his impressive gunslinging abilities, which many compare to Brett Favre. Williams shares many qualities with Mahomes and is expected to be the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
