Is Shedeur Sanders' fear of Chidozie Nwankwo a sign of respect or a lack of confidence?

The Colorado Buffaloes brought a whole new weapon to their arsenal when Chidozie Nwankwo transferred to Boulder in December. Coach Prime has brought in a bunch of formidable players for this season and yet, the majority of them pale in comparison to the bulk and the size of the 5-foot-11, 290-pound monster of a defensive lineman.

Chidozie Nwankwo, the former DL for the Houston Cougars, was with the team for over 4 years before he came to Colorado to play under Coach Prime. Deion Sanders brought in a new wave of defensive linemen when his son, Shedeur, was tackled over 50 times last year, and with the addition of Nwankwo, the fans can be damn sure that their star QB will be well-protected. Also, Shedeur seemed to be greatly impressed with Nwankwo and his abilities and talked about how he wouldn’t want to be in front of the “BlockBully’s” charging attack.

Shedeur Sanders was interviewed during Colorado’s morning training session by Joe Gleason, and the reporter seemed rather excited to ask him about his thoughts on Chidozie Nwankwo. The QB enthusiastically gave his answer, but not without a tremor in his voice, which indicated that Nwankwo and his strength aren’t something that Shedeur would want to mess with.

Gleason asked Shedeur if he had a chance to see Nwankwo in action, “up close and personal” and let’s just say that Shedeur is counting his lucky stars that Chidozie is on the same team rather than an opponent. He said, “Chidozie! Big guy! He’s somebody I would not let sack me. I always ID Chidozie. He not finna sack me. Nah, he’s definitely a star player. I’m excited to see him in camp and get out there and compete. We got new and improved O-lineman, we got new and improved D-lineman so it’s gonna be real fun. Day-to-day.

Thus, Chidozie will prove to be a valuable asset for the Colorado team’s defensive line, something which they drastically struggled with last season. With all that said, let’s take a look at what Nwankwo’s former coaches had to say about him and his nickname, the “Block Bully.”

What’s your perspective on:

Is Shedeur Sanders' fear of Chidozie Nwankwo a sign of respect or a lack of confidence?

Have an interesting take?

Why is Nwankwo called the “Block Bully”?

As per his 2023 stats in Colorado, he allowed 176.4 rushing yards per game last season, which is not very good if we look at the sort of reputation he has on the field. But seeing as how it was his debut with Colorado, Nwankwo will be looking forward to proving himself this season and demolishing all that comes in his path.

According to Nathon Trawick, the former Houston assistant defensive line coach, the players on the offensive line were actually scared of Nwankwo. He said, “He’s really the ‘Block Bully,’ so offensive linemen are scared of him. There’s guys on our team that’s like, ‘yeah, he’s not the guy to mess with.’ The name is as advertised. He likes eating up blocks, and he likes destroying blocks.

Tank Jenkins, the offensive lineman for the Houston Cougars, also had a rather scary opinion about Nwankwo and explained the actual reason why he’s called the “Block Bully.” He said, “If he puts his hands on you, he’s going to stop you. That’s where he gets the ‘Block Bully’ from because people try to double-team him and he won’t go anywhere. He’ll just sit right there (in the gap).”

It’s safe to say, all eyes will be on “Block Bully” and how he ends up protecting Shedeur because a good defense might just set the Buffaloes apart and land them in a decent position on the points table, unlike the disastrous 2023 season.
